NDRF gives demo of rescue operations

A team of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF)’s 10th battalion gave a demonstration of exposure of the public to radioactive material, on its premises at the TB sanatorium here on Thursday.

Trained personnel of NDRF showed how the Gannavaram airport in Krishna district is sanitised and people are rescued from radiation caused by the crash of an aircraft carrying a radioactive substance. NDRF Deputy Inspector General (South) S.P. Selvan witnessed the demonstration in the presence of 10th battalion Commandant Prasanth Dhar and 2nd-in-Command Sanjay Kumar.

No sooner the airport officials alerted the district officials concerned about people falling sick due to exposure to the radiation, NDRF was called in to contain the damage. Equipped with NBC – proof masks and gloves and a variety of other devices, a special team of NDRF along with scientists of the Department of Atomic Energy and doctors rushed to the spot and took up the salvage operation.
