With the orders from Joint Collector Vivek Yadav, Srikakulam municipality has displayed the list of the “VIPs” who have failed in paying property tax for many years. Flexi boards carrying the name of the defaulters have been put up at all prominent places in the town including at Potti Sriramulu junction, Surya Mahal, 7Roads junction and Day and Night area to step up pressure on latter to clear their pending dues.
Former municipal Chairperson Andhavarapu Varaha Narasimham, other prominent persons including Kamineni Viswati, Baratam Susheela, Perla Kamaraju, B. Uday Shankar, Magatapalli Shankara Rao, and Killamsetti Parvatisham, Boddepalli kalpana, Potnuru Ramarao and others figured in the list and the tax dues range from Rs. 2 lakh to Rs.31 lakh.
A few days ago, Municipal Commissioner Bapiraju informed the Special Officer of the Municipality and Joint Collector Vivek Yadav that more than 250 persons had turned clod shoulders to payment of their property tax dues, despite several notices being served on them. The officials, who hesitated to reveal the names of top defaulters, could finally put flexi boards with special officer’s suggestion.
Mr. Vivek Yadav told the Municipal officials that the civic body could not take up developmental activities and pay salaries to its staff, if it failed to collect property tax properly. However, many of the defaulters strongly objected to this move, saying that they had moved the court over the ‘wrong’ assessment of their properties.
Meanwhile, Srikakulam Citizens Forum president Baratam Kameswara Rao welcomed the decision of the civic body. “The municipality did a good thing. It will act as a deterrent and make others pay their tax promptly,” he said.
