Chief Minister and Telugu Desam Party (TDP) national president N. Chandrababu Naidu on Friday sounded poll bugle for the 2019 elections at party’s extended general meeting on Friday.

“This is election year. It is a historic necessity that we retain power. We need to focus on politics and target all the 175 Assembly seats,” was the message to the rank and file of the party.

A day after reminding the bureaucracy at Collectors’conference that it was “crucial year for the government” to achieve the set targets and improve public satisfaction, Mr. Naidu suggested to his party colleagues to translate the public satisfaction of 74% into votes. People from all walks of life were satisfied with the government and governance. Onus lies on the leaders to turn the tide in their favour, he said. Even while saying that he would like to retain the existing team, Mr. Naidu hinted that he would not hesitate to bring in new faces in constituencies where the leaders failed to perform. A few leaders were sailing against the wind, while some others would win the election if conducted at this moment. “Now, question before me is whether should I change you or make you effective,” he said.

Dig at BJP

The BJP leaders lost their ground due to their ego. Prime Minister Narendra Modi was most acceptable leader just before last elections. After four years, the people turned against him. Every leader should learn lessons from the failures of the BJP. A leader would be successful only if he was cordial with cadre and mingled with the people, he said.

Referring to dissatisfaction among public over injustice meted out to state by the Union government, Mr. Naidu said, “We need to provide leadership and give proper shape to the public resentment. And, consolidate the party base and support.”

TDP polit bureau member P. Ashok Gajapati Raju, Deputy Chief Minister Nimmakayala Chinarajappa, Agriculture Minister Chandramohan Reddy, former Speaker Pratibha Bharati and others were present.
