Sri Padmavathi Mahila Viswa Vidyalayam (SPMVV) was abuzz with activity on Monday, with a peer team from UGC’s National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) going to all the departments as part of its three-day visit to the campus. The visit is mainly to physically correlate the facts submitted by the varsity in its Self Study Report (SSR) to NAAC.

The seven-member team led by K. Meena, former Vice-Chancellor of Bharathidasan University, heard the presentation by the Vice-Chancellor V. Durga Bhavani and the six members divided into three groups of two members each and visited various departments, accompanied by the chairperson.

The members visited the departments like Applied Microbiology, Mass Communication and Journalism, Pharmacy, Home Science, Law, Computer Science, Biotechnology, Sericulture, English, MBA, Zoology, Physics, Chemistry, Botany, Music etc. The team appreciated the accomplishments of many departments, while some turned out to be a let-down.

The administrative building has recently been spruced up with an all-glass façade. While the all-women university is apparently in an advantageous position vis-à-vis the international collaborations and research projects, the other side of the coin is very different. The crammed hostels, the inability to expand due to space constraints, lack of motivation among students and the general disinterest evinced by girl students to join the varsity, which is evident from the fall in admissions, are some areas that the authorities find hard to convince.

The members will visit the health centre, day-care centre, hostels, computer centre, NSS bureau, library, gymnasium, finance office etc. on Tuesday and submit the report on Wednesday.
