Thanking the family members of Ayesha Meera for believing in his innocence and extending their support to him for the last eight years, Pidatala Satyam Babu, 30, who was jailed for eight years in connection with the sensational murder case of the pharmacy student and was given a clean chit by the High Court, said on Sunday that he had no plans yet on how to eke out a livelihood to take care of his family.

A visibly happy Babu was released from the Central prison here in the morning in the presence of his mother, Mariyamma, advocates and representatives of the Human Rights Forum and of a few Dalit organisations. It was a festive atmosphere outside the prison, as people in large numbers gathered to see him.

“My release is nothing but the victory of our judicial system. During my stint in the prison, I was able to see from close quarters the lives of several people who were accused in different cases. Most of them congratulated me on knowing that I was given a clean chit,” he said.

Ayesha Meera was raped and killed in a private hostel at Ibrahimpatnam, near Vijayawada, on December 27, 2007 and Mr. Babu was arrested by the police subsequently.

The Vijayawada court awarded life imprisonment to him and he was shifted to the Central Prison here some eight years ago.

Assistance sought

Urging the State government to help the family members of Ayesha Meera, Mr. Babu said his family too was in a bad condition owing to financial problems.
