Young and old came together on New Year eve to welcome 2015 with lots of hopes and aspirations.
Saying goodbye to the year that was, revellers raced on motorcycles and wished a happy new year to each other. Prakasam District Collector G.S.R.K.R. Vijaykumar, who won the National Literacy Award from President Pranab Mukherjee, used the occasion to collect pencils, pens, notebooks for distribution to neo-literates and underprivileged children of State-run schools.
Celebrations were marked by mingling of modernity and tradition. Jewett Memorial Baptist Church, mother of Baptist churches in the south, was illuminated as also 150 other churches in the city. Temples in the city, including the ancient Chennakeshava temple, turned a beehive as devotees thronged them in the night.
Lighting traditional earthen lamps in a pattern, students of Montessori Public School here welcomed the New Year in a unique way. Kindergarten students of the school on their own prepared attractive greeting cards and posted them to their grandparents to surprise them.
A gift exchange programme was organised on the occasion with each student bringing an attractive gift and put them in a big basket. After a draw of lottery, each and every student returned home with a gift, its correspondent Prakash Babu said.
In Bashyam Little Champs School, students under the guidance of its academic in-charge N. Susheela played fun-filled games on the occasion. They exchanged sweets before leaving for their homes for the celebrations late in the night.
