May 08, 2014 07:53 pm | Updated 07:53 pm IST - VIZIANAGARAM:

It was a pleasant surprise for voters at polling station No. 147 at the Maharajah’s Government Music and Dance College here, for it resembled a marriage hall. In accordance with the Election Commission directive, the District Returning Officer opened one model polling station in each of the nine Assembly constituencies.

The polling station stood different with a welcome arch at the entrance, green carpets, shamiana, first-aid facilities, drinking water and arm chairs for the aged. In addition, ornamental plants were placed in a row. The station was also equipped with air cooler and neatly laid tables.

Presiding Officer G. Sasi Kala, dressed in a saree and a black overcoat with the EC logo, sat behind a table, while five polling officers, dressed in white overcoats, were carrying out the polling process.
