An eight-year-old girl was allegedly raped by her neighbour in the forest area at Sileru, under the G.K. Veedhi police station limits in the district on Thursday. Though the crime took place on Wednesday, it came to light on Thursday after the victim’s family lodged a police complaint.

The G.K. Veedhi police said the accused had been identified as Pangi Jinnu (40), who was at large, and both the accused and the victim belonged to the ST community. Jinnu along with his son and the girl and a few other children went to the forest to collect firewood on Wednesday.

He reportedly took the girl inside the forest under some pretext and allegedly raped her. Jinnu’s son and other children were collecting firewood at the time.

The victim’s mother noticed that her daughter was in a pensive mood and cajoled her to reveal the reason.

Preliminary investigation revealed that Jinnu had committed the crime and the accused was booked under Section 376 (Rape) of IPC and Section 3 of POCSO Act.
