Minister for Medical Education Kamineni Srinivas on Thursday ordered for a cleanup of the Government General Hospital (GGH) here and asked District Collector Kantilal Dande and Municipal Commissioner C. Anuradha to launch a special drive to get rid of rodents on the premises.

A day after the shocking incident of a newborn dying after being bitten by rodents in the GGH, the Minister said that the incident was an ‘unfortunate,’ one.

The Minister along with Ministers P. Pulla Rao and Peethala Sujatha, Mr. Kantilal Dande, Superintendent of Police Sarva Sresth Tripathi held an emergency review meeting with the doctors and staff at the hospital.

``We will launch a special drive to clean up the campus and at this stage, we are not contemplating action against errant sanitary contractors since the daily works could be crippled. We will also have a long-term plan for developing the infrastructure at the hospitals and think of using the services of senior revenue officials to oversee the administration of the teaching hospitals,’’ Dr. Srinivas said.

Earlier, a scuffle broke out between the YSRCP leaders and the police after the former tried to enter the room in the super specialty block where the ministers and the officials were present. After a minor altercation, the YSRCP leaders V. Radhakrishna, Lella Appireddy and Meruga Nagarjuna were allowed to go inside.

The Minister also met the parents of the newborn, Chava Lakshmi and Naga Raju, and announced a compensation of Rs.5 lakh to the family.
