The Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) is waiting for gazette notification of the Telangana State to challenge the law and order powers being vested with the Governor through the A.P. State Reorganisation Bill. The party feels the whole thing is not only unconstitutional but undermines the very authority of the popularly elected government.
“It is preposterous to think that the Chief Minister of Telangana will have control over 8.5 districts and the Governor on 1.5 districts comprising the GHMC area spread over Hyderabad and Ranga Reddy districts,” said Majlis president, Asaduddin Owaisi.
It is also strange to imagine that the Telangana government will have no control over law and order in Hyderabad and Cyberabad when it is going to bear the financial burden of policing here, the Majlis leader said.
Bifurcation of the State, the Majlis feels, would result in the BJP getting strong. It fears that in the event of the latter coming to power, it is likely to appoint a ‘hardcore’ RSS person as the Governor. “What will happen to minorities who have already suffered miscarriage of justice in the Makka Masjid blast case,” asked Mr. Owaisi.
He faulted Telangana protagonists for accepting the bifurcation of the State in ‘desperation’ without realising what they were getting into. There is no clarity on a number of issues like national status for Pranahita-Chevella project and power situation in the region. Yet no one is talking about it. “Even the distribution of debts, assets and liabilities is being done in a manner not acceptable to all,” Mr. Owaisi said.
He took strong objection to the vacuum created in the wake of the resignation of Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy.
The Centre should either impose President’s rule in the State or install a popular government. “Some Constitutional step should be taken urgently. The State can’t be left in a limbo,” Mr. Owaisi remarked.
