Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen president and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi was remanded to 14-day judicial custody after his plea for cancellation of the non-bailable warrant (NBW) was rejected by a magistrate here on Monday.

Immediately after his remand, the police took him away to the district jail at Kandi, about four km from here and was lodged as an undertrial prisoner number 1273. Following a direction from the court, the MP would be treated as ‘special prisoner.’

Owaisi is accused number one in a 2005 case relating to manhandling of the then Collector, A.K. Singhal, and other officials. His brother, Akbaruddin Owaisi, is accused number two and is currently in Adilabad jail.

Earlier, the MIM leader surrendered before the Judicial First Class Magistrate (JFCM) and Prohibition and Excise Special Court Magistrate K. Maruthi Devi. He was accompanied by a team of lawyers, who filed three petitions, including the surrender petition. Following the rejection of the recall petition on NBW, a second bail petition was filed, and it was admitted and posted to Tuesday for hearing.

In connection with the 2005 incident, cases were registered under Sections 147, 153-A, 353, 290, 295-A, 186, 341, 504 and 506 of IPC and also under Section 7 of Criminal Amendment Act.

Under the ‘special prisoner’ category, Owaisi would be served specially cooked food. He would also be supplied with newspapers, table, chair and cot.

He was kept in Admission Block which has an attached washroom as well.

MIM legislators Ahmed Balala (Malakpet) and Afsar Khan (Karwan) met Owaisi in jail and were closeted with him for about 10 minutes.

MIM activists caned

Some of the MIM activists were caned by the police at Pothireddypally Chowrasta when they tried to obstruct the vehicle in which Owaisi was taken to jail.

A two-day bandh call given by MIM evoked a mixed response in Sangareddy town.
