Mohammed Illyas, accused of raping and abusing a 14-year-old girl from Kadiri mandal, surrendered before police on Thursday.

He was immediately taken into custody and produced before a judge at Kadiri who remanded Illyas in 14-day custody.

Mr. Illyas, who is Anantapur district convenor of the Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) and had contested the last Assembly elections, allegedly repeatedly raped a minor girl for over several months. He also threatened her of exposing her videos which were secretly filmed, the complainant alleged.

Mr. Illyas remained untraceable ever since the police registered an FIR after the victim and her parents lodged a complaint two days ago. Anantapur SP S.V. Rajasekhar Babu said that the case would be investigated thoroughly.
