Mild tremors cause panic at few places in AP

Panic-stricken residents ran out of their houses to open places. There are, however, no reports of any damage of casualties.

Mild tremors that occurred around 11.45 am on Saturday created panic among residents at several places in Andhra Pradesh. Panic-stricken residents ran out of their houses to open places. There are, however, no reports of any damage of casualties.

In Krishna district, residents of Gollapudi and surrounding areas felt the tremors for couple of seconds. In East Godavari, the tremors lasted a few seconds and customers at a shopping complex in Amalapuram ran for safety after the chairs and furniture started shaking.

Deputy Chief Minister and Home Minister N. Chinna Rajappa who was on the way to Rajahmundry to attend a few programmes, asked his driver to stop his car. “I felt little giddiness and thought my blood pressure had gone down. I saw people rushing out of a shopping complex. When I enquired, I came to know that there were mild tremors in Amalapuram, Rajahmundry in the district,” he said.

In Srikakulam, tremors were felt in several areas particularly all along the 174 km sea coast. Tremors were mainly observed in places like Gara, Polaki, Srikurmam, Kalingapatnam, Srikakulam and Ranasthalam and Pydibhimavaram among other places.

Residents of Srikakulam town rushed out of their houses as they had experienced tremors for more than four seconds in Visakha-A colony, Bankers' colony and other places. “Furniture and utensils moved suddenly. Immediately, we came out from homes to avoid untoward incidents. Luckily, the impact is minimal,” said K. Durga, a resident of Visakha-A colony.

In Visakahapatnam, residents of Muralinagar, Akkayyapalem, Seetammadhara north extension and port area in the city, some areas in Bheemunipatnam reported that tremors were felt for two to three seconds. Many of them rushed out of their homes and those living in the apartments and offices climbed down the steps to open places.
