Tectonic activity in the area is remote, say officials

Mild tremors were felt on Tuesday at Jeedipalli village of Beluguppa mandal in the district where a reservoir was located.

The tremors triggered panic among the villagers as they experienced similar situation a few days ago in which a few houses developed cracks.

“We experienced mild tremors in our house in the morning. We ran out of the house. Te tremors lasted only a few seconds,” Ramakrishna Reddy, a villager, told The Hindu .

No damage whatsoever was reported to the revenue officials who visited the village.

Recently, four villages in the mandals of Beluguppa and Uravakonda felt tremors. Damage to houses and roads was reported then. The Ground Water Department officials attributed the activity to rapid extraction of water from the Jeedipalli reservoir and its surrounding water table during the months leading to summer and rapid recharge of the water table in less than two weeks by 4 metres.

The NGRI is yet to confirm any such occurrence.

“We have observed during our visit to Jeedipalli cracks on walls and roads. The villagers have said that they heard rumblings. The chances of tectonic activity in the area are remote as it has igneous rock. Tectonic activity because of saturation recharge of the water table in other areas (non-igneous rock landforms) is possible. Our observations till date haven’t found even a single borewell affected due to the tectonic activity,” said a senior official of the department.
