Mild tension prevailed at the Gandhi Centre here on Friday afternoon when Chittoor Mayor Katari Anuradha and her spouse Katari Mohan along with TDP activists staged a dharna at the I-Town police station, blocking traffic for an hour, over the arrest of the Mayor’s relative.

The I-Town police had on Friday morning arrested Chandrasekhar alias Chintu, brother-in-law of Katari Mohan, for allegedly preventing I-town SI C. Lakshmikanth from performing his duties on the district court premises on November 26. Police said Chandrasekhar, while attending the court in connection with a murder attempt case had objected to police checking his vehicle and threatened the SI.

Chandrasekhar was accused of attempting to murder former MLA C.K. Babu. Following the arrest, the Katari couple rushed to the police station and staged a protest demanding that Chandrasekhar be released immediately.

Armed parties were deployed at the police station, and all vulnerable areas in the town. They wanted the SI to be suspended. Meanwhile, DSP Lakshmi Naidu met the couple, and the accused was released on bail. The couple alleged that police had foisted a false case against their relative.
