The multiple elections have brought home migrant workers early this season. Around 50 per cent of workers who migrated to other parts of the State started returning in the past few days.

The migration of workers in a large number was reported from Aluru, Adoni, Pathikonda, Kodumur and Panyam constituencies.

The workers gave different reasons for early return saying that employment also declined at the new places this year due to disturbances caused by the State bifurcation.

A group of workers from Yanagandla said they would return to work at the new places once the elections are over. Asked whether any political party had invited them to the village, the workers said only their neighbours informed them about the election and the Ugadi festival also prompted them to return home.

Despite the efforts of the officials to provide employment through NREGS and other methods, the exodus of workers continued every year. Mr. Shadrak, district secretary of Farm workers union, said only improved irrigation facilities in the drought prone areas would retain them back.
