A crucial meeting between Special Chief Secretary (Sports) and Principal Secretary, Municipal Administration, will be held in a week’s time to take a decision on the functioning of municipal stadiums, playfields and community halls in the State.

Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh Managing Director N. Bangara Raju on Tuesday said the meeting will finally pave the way for the municipal administration to develop the entire sports infrastructure under its purview and for handing it over to SAAP for conducting the sporting activities in a systematic manner.

Mr. Raju said that in a review meeting held recently between the sports and municipal administration departments, instructions were passed to civic bodies to identify the stadiums, play-fields and community halls in all the 13 districts, for development.

“No private or government functions will be held after the decision is taken to develop the stadiums. The practice of giving the municipal stadiums to events other than sports will come to an end soon,” he promised.

He said after the bifurcation, the new capital city of Vijayawada had no better place to stage government events including meetings involving Chief Minister and the authorities preferred Indira Gandhi Municipal Stadium more for security purpose.

He said along with IGMC, venues such as Makineni Basavapunnaiah municipal stadium in Singhnagar, Patamata Indoor stadium and DRRMC indoor stadium would be given a facelift.
