Car maker Maruti Suzuki is pursuing a multi-pronged strategy to achieve 2 million-a-year vehicle sale target by 2020 that comprises new launches, improved research and development capabilities and creating a separate marketing channel for premium products.

In the current fiscal, the country’s leading car maker – with a market share of 46 per cent – is looking to post double digit growth.

Last year, Maruti Suzuki India Ltd Executive Director-Marketing and Sales R.S. Kalsi said, the company had gained a market share of 2.9 per cent.

It expects the momentum witnessed in the first quarter – 13 per cent growth – to be carried forward. He was interacting with presspersons at the opening of Saboo R.K. Motor’s Nexa Jubilee showroom. One more Nexa showroom of Varun Motors, another leading Maruti dealer in the city, was opened earlier in the day.

The Nexa showrooms across the country will be to promote only high-end cars from the Suzuki stable, beginning with the S-Cross to be launched next month.

Mr. Kalsi said Maruti Suzuki, which sold over a million cars last year (11.7 lakh), has announced plans to set up a plant in Gujarat. It will be in addition to the existing facilities in Gurgaon and Manesar whose combined capacity is 15 lakh vehicles.

The Gujarat facility will bring 7.5 lakh units more, starting with 2.5 lakh in the first phase. It will be operational in 2017, he said..

The company’s R&D facility in Haryana, partly operational now, is expected to become fully operational in 2017.
