Two persons -- an intermediate girl student and a TRS activist -- allegedly committed suicide dejected over the delay in formation of Telangana State.
Katta Sathaiah (27), a mason and Telangana Rashtra Samiti activist since 2001 of Buddaram, about 20 km from here, allegedly committed suicide by jumping from a 65-foot water tank in the village after midnight on Sunday, anguished over the delay in formation of Telangana, party activists said later.
A 17-year-old Inter student Ittamalla Kavita, of Lakshmidevigudam, in Vemulapalli mandal, allegedly committed suicide by immolating self on Saturday, in support of Telangana.
She was shifted to a hospital in Hyderabad where she succumbed to burns.
Identified as ‘TRS and Telangana Sathyam’, Sathaiah was unmarried and supported his mother Anjamma, a widow.
His elder brother and sister are married and stay elsewhere. Sathaiah, who climbed the water tank after 12.30 a.m. telephoned friends in the village and a party leader here informing them of his intent to commit suicide and jumped despite persuasion by them not to resort to such desperate act.
Villagers took him to local government hospital in an autorickshaw. Sathaiah, who broke his legs and suffered severe internal injuries, is said to have died within half-an-hour on the outskirts of Nalgonda.
Party leaders, led by district president B. Narender Reddy, paid tributes to him, after placing the body at the martyrs’ memorial (Clock Tower) here.
Talking to press persons, he appealed to Telangana protagonists not to end lives pressing for statehood, but fight for securing it. The body was later taken to Buddaram, where the funeral took place. T. Harish Rao, TRS deputy floor leader, was among those present.
Sathaiah is the second party supporter to end life for Telangana within 10 days. Last week a journalist, Ramulu committed suicide.
