Noted women’s rights activist and writer Malladi Subbamma passed away on Thursday.
Ninety-year-old Subbamma had been ailing for some time due to old age and she breathed her last this afternoon. An active member of the rationalist movement, Subbamma pledged her body to the Osmania Medical College.
She authored several books including “Women and Social Reforms” and was editor of magazine ‘Stree Swetcha.’ Subbamma worked for improvement of female literacy. She became a prominent personality after launching the anti-liquor movement and succeeded in ensuring that the then Government headed by late N.T. Rama Rao imposed total prohibition in the State immediately after assuming power for the second time in 1994.
TDP president N. Chandrababu Naidu expressed grief over the demise of Subbamma. In a message, he recalled her services for cause of society, women in particular, through her writings. He conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family.
YSR Congress president Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy said Subbamma was a principled activist and writer who was committed to the cause of women empowerment.
