Major fire in alloys factory

A major fire broke out apparently owing to short circuit that led to the blast of a 9mv transformer at Andhra Ferro Alloys Factory at Garbham in Merakamudidam mandal in the early hours of Tuesday.

Under its impact, the factory ceiling caved in, a blast furnace collapsed, damaging the plant machinery. However, no casualties were reported.

According to information, the maintenance staff of the plant noticed sparks near the transformer at around 4 a.m. They immediately asked around the 100 workers working in the night shift to vacate the premises. Three fire fighting units from Cheepurupalli, Gajapathinagaram, and Badangi used foam sprayers to put out the fire.
