People littering on city roads and urinating in public places will have to pay a hefty fine of ₹500 to the civic body hereafter.

As part of its Swachh initiative, the Corporation has decided to impose the fine against those causing trouble to the public.

The fine will be imposed as per the spot fine notification issued by the Swachh Bharat mission.

“A fine of ₹500 will be imposed against the persons violating the rule. The city has been awarded ODF status but open urination and littering are going on. To curb the practice, the rule will be enforced after due publicity,” said Municipal Commissioner J. Nivas.

He said additional arrangements were being made to provide public toilets. “All the community toilets have been streamlined and ‘namma’ [mana] toilets are placed in 19 locations. Also, mobile toilets will be placed at busy junctions,” he said.

A private firm would be roped in to maintain sanitation at the toilets in 14 municipal schools.
