Officials of the Legal Metrology Department unearthed a major scam in mining of literate and booked cases against the contractor and officers of the Mines and Forest Departments.

The material was allegedly being extracted from Girijanapuram village, Prathipadu mandal in East Godavari district.

On receiving information that Andrew Minerals was mining excess material than the permitted limit, the Legal Metrology officials intercepted a lorry and after weighment found that the lorry was carrying 27.38 tonnes, while the permitted load was only 20 tonnes, said IG Legal Metrology E. Damodar.

“The transit permits were issued by Mines and Forest Department authorities, and during investigation it was found that some staff of both the departments colluded with the authorised contractor,” the IG said.

“We are verifying as to since how long the contractor was mining literate in the village and how much loss the accused might have caused to the exchequer. Criminal cases have been registered and investigation is on”, Mr. Damodar said.
