Supreme Court Judge Madan B Lokur has called upon the legal fraternity to be aware of commercial courts, competition laws and cyber laws, which were some of the “emerging trends” in jurisprudence. These issues were being discussed and debated, but they have not yet crystallised into some kind of jurisprudence in the country. “We need to look at these issues carefully,” he said.

Addressing a two-day international workshop on Intellectual Property, Commercial and Emerging Laws here on Friday, Justice Lokur said one of the areas that was being actively looked at in India in ease of doing business is the efficacy of commercial courts. “Commercial courts have been started at several places, I am told, but a study of these courts is being done in Delhi and Mumbai only.” There was no reason why other States or cities should be excluded from this study, he said.

Referring to cyber crime, Justice Lokur pointed out that some of the statutes in other countries relating to crime and information technology were way ahead of the laws in India.

The Union government promulgated an Act to provide for the constitution of Commercial Courts, Commercial Division and Commercial Appellate Division in the High Courts for adjudicating commercial disputes of specified value.

Supreme Court Judge N.V. Ramana appealed to the Chief Minister to establish a judicial academy in Andhra Pradesh to help legal research and for empowering lawyers of the region.

High Court of Judicature for Telangana and Andhra Pradesh Acting Chief justice Justice Ramesh Ranganathan said judiciary should gear up to face challenges encountered in the present development scenario.
