CPI central committee member K. Narayana led a protest against the proposed ordinances to the Land Acquisition Bill courting arrest during a ‘jail bharo’, programme held here on Thursday.

The leaders were taken away by police and lodged at Chebrolu police station for some time. Later, they were released on bail.

Hundreds of CPI activists holding red flags gathered in front of the Collector’s office in the morning and shouted slogans against the NDA government.

Addressing the activists, Mr. Narayana accused the NDA government of taking the ordinance route to get the changes to the Act.

After failing to get through the amendment in the Rajya Sabha where the NDA was in a minority, the government was trying to get the nod from the select committee.

Lashing out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the CPI leader said Mr. Modi, who had hoodwinked the people by portraying himself as a ‘chaiwallah’, had soon shown his true colours by draping Rs.10 lakh suite and going on a spree of visits to countries.

He also found fault with the new industrial policy which could spell doom to farmers.

Party district secretary Jangala Ajay Kumar said the Jail Bharo programme was part of a call given at the national convention held recently at Puducherry to hold protest demonstrations against BJP government.

Senior leaders of the party, G.V Krishna Rao, city secretary Kota Malyadri were also present.

In Tirupati CPI activists organised a protest programme in front of the local RDO’s office. They termed the amendments as a “major blow to small and marginal farmers”.

The office premises virtually turned ‘red’, as hordes of activists, flaunting party flags and holding placards and banners highlighted their demands.

CPI workers conducted ‘Jail Bharo’ programme in Vijayadawada, and other places in the State.
