The government has sanctioned Rs. 4 crore for constructing a four-storeyed building for the veterinary hospital-cum-polyclinic in Kurnool and Rs. 1 crore for procuring sophisticated equipment for treating animals.
The building design was approved and tender was finalised and construction work would commence in a week, in charge Deputy Director of Animal Husbandry K. Ramachandraiah told The Hindu on Monday.
The hospital building would have a full-fledged operation theatre, intravenous fluid room, x-ray plant, inpatient rooms for domestic and farm animals, farmers’ rest rooms, hostel for trainees and field staff with rooms and a dormitory, a meeting hall, and would get equipment such as an ultrasound scanner, digital x-ray and endoscopy. The hospital would be fill-fledged in all aspects within a year, Dr. Ramachandraiah said.
Parvo viral enteritis disease was rampant among unvaccinated pet dogs with symptoms of fever, vomiting and blood motions, necessitating administration of saline and treatment ranging from a week to 10 days.
There was no medicine to cure the viral disease, he added. Zoonotic diseases such as rabies and leptospirosis were also prevalent moderately, Dr. Ramachandraiah said. Vaccinated pet dogs were however not affected by the viral fevers and large animals were not afflicted by any specific diseases. Doctors were treating about 100 to 120 animals every day including 60 dogs and 30 sheep and goats, in the veterinary polyclinic operating in the old building now. Most cases in rainy season related to animals facing delivery-related problems.
Dr. Ramachandraiah advocated the need for sanctioning an animal ambulance in Kurnool, a facility that was presently available only at Gudivada in Krishna district. Farmers who shift large sick animals to hospitals bear the ambulance charges fixed depending on the distance of travel, he said.
The Deputy Director posts were vacant all over the State, as their promotion issue was pending in the Supreme Court.
Promotion of assistant directors was pending and hence veterinary surgeons who put in more than 22 years of service were yet to get promotions, he said. Out of 122 veterinary assistant posts, about 15 were vacant, he added.
