Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy has observed that legislators have become more like ward members (of gram panchayat) these days as they spend most of their time on petty issues and problems instead of making laws and debating policies for which they are primarily elected.
Speaking at the release of book titled “Prapancha Deshalu – Palana Vyavasthalu” (world countries and their administrative systems) authored by Congress MLA Dr. Daggubati Venkateswara Rao, here on Saturday the Chief Minister said he was pained at the functioning of Assembly nowadays and remarked: “Except making laws, everything else is happening in the Assembly.”
Dr. Venkateswara Rao could spare time for penning his thoughts as the Congress party had not been utilising his services appropriately, Mr. Kiran Reddy felt and suggested making better use of the former’s experience. He said the societies and systems which would adapt themselves to the changes faster would progress better.
Significantly, leaders, irrespective of their political affiliations, converged at a single platform.
Judge of Supreme Court Justice J. Chalameshwar said shortage of courts was one of the main reasons for pendency of cases in the country. He sought to know whether any voter had come across a politician who had promised to set up new courts.
Giving an introduction about the book, veteran journalist I. Venkata Rao said the writer dealt in detail how political and administrative systems evolved across the globe. He had also explained the link between politics and religion and vice-versa.
TRS MLA K.T. Rama Rao said decentralisation of power, representative democracy and increased role of people in governance, all mentioned in the book, were the reasons behind the demand for Telangana State. Ch. Vidyasagar Rao of BJP pointed out that culture was the main reason that disintegrated USSR and integrated Germany.
Dr. Venkateswara Rao, his wife and Union Minister D. Purandeswari, Ummareddy Venkateswarlu of YSR Congress, B.V. Raghavulu of CPI (M) and Tummala Nageswara Rao of TDP spoke.
