A childless woman kidnapped a new-born baby boy from Gandhi Hospital in Secunderabad in the early hours of Sunday. However, by evening the city police managed to nab her at Tenali in Guntur district and rescued the baby.

The baby belongs to Y. Sumitra and Manohar hailing from Borabanda here. Police said 29-year-old Sumitra gave birth to a baby boy on Saturday afternoon. As her husband was anxiously standing near the labour room, a woman approached him introducing herself as Bujji.

The lady gained his confidence and went inside the labour room and also befriended Manohar’s family. She also purchased medicines for Sumitra from a nearby medical hall.

On Sunday morning, she took the baby in her arms and told the mother that she would return soon with the child after consulting the doctor. As Bujji failed to come back after an hour, the worried relatives started searching for her in the hospital, but in vain. The family immediately approached Chilkalguda police who formed special teams to trace the kidnapper.

Police officials verified footage of surveillance cameras at Secunderabad railway station along with Manohar, who identified the woman while boarding the Janmabhoomi Express going to Vishakapatnam. Officials alerted the railway police who nabbed Bujji at Tenali and rescued the baby.

Guntur Staff Reporter adds:

In Tenali, the boy was given nourishment in the Government Hospital and arrangements were made to hand him over to his parents on Monday. He is stated to be in good health. III-Town police are investigating the case along with Hyderabad City police. Charges of kidnap and conspiracy were framed on the accused.
