July 02, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 09:36 am IST - ALAPPUZHA:

The season of boat races in the State started with the Chambakkulam boat race here on Wednesday. Though the races commenced under bright sky amidst fears of rain, the real setback came at the end of the day-long preparations with the final result of the chundan valloms (snake boats) being withheld.

The result would be announced later, a Moolam Jaloltsava Committee official, told The Hindu. Earlier, the races were inaugurated by Kodikkunnil Suresh, MP. Nineteen boats, including five snake boats, offered a glittering show to hundreds of spectators lined up along the banks of the Pampa.

Pulinkunnam Chundan, Chambakkulam Chundan, Saint Pious Tenth Chundan, Nadubhagom Puthan Chundan, and Vellamkulangara Chundan were the snake-boats that were in the race.

The races were held in separate categories such as Veppu, Churulan and Oadi. The Veppu A category result too was withheld.
