Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) has thanked the Congress leadership and the Union Government for taking forward the process of formation of Telangana State by clearing the draft bill, though it has objections on some of the provisions in it.

Party president K. Chandrasekhar Rao said after a three-hour polit bureau meeting attended by party MPs, MLAs and MLCs here on Friday that Telangana State had been possible mainly because of AICC president Sonia Gandhi’s commitment and courage. “Special thanks to Sonia Gandhi for making the dream of Telangana people possible”.

He also thanked the Prime Minister, Union Cabinet, BJP and other parties who had supported statehood to Telangana. “It’s not anybody’s victory but the result of sacrifices made by martyrs”, Mr. Chandrasekhar Rao said. He had appealed to people in 2001 to cooperate with him and he would get them Telangana with a call to stone him to death in case he betrayed them. “They supported me and made it possible,” he stated.

The polit bureau meeting examined the draft bill and experts were still studying it so that the party could write to the Prime Minister on the objections it had against the provisions in the draft bill and requesting him to correct anomalies in the final bill. “If our requests are not obliged, we will raise them in Parliament and convince it that our objections are genuine,” the TRS chief said.

Strongly objecting to the provision of investing powers on law and order to Governor in GHMC limits Mr. Chandrasekhar Rao said any infringements of the powers of a democratically elected government would be against the constitution. “It amounts to insulting the people of Telangana who want their State (29 one) to be like the 28 others and should share similar ties with the Centre. Besides, law and order is a State subject,” he said.
