Indian Police Service officer of the 1981 batch, Jasti Venkata Ramudu, on Monday took over as the first Director-General of the residuary State of Andhra Pradesh, post the birth of Telangana.

Hailing from Narsimpalli of Bathalapalli mandal in Anantapur district, he has worked in different capacities, battling extremism on one hand and factions on the other. “The duties of the police are pretty much the same, regardless of the location. We are expected to give our best to ensure that people live in peace,” he said, speaking to The Hindu soon after becoming the DGP of A.P.

“With honesty, sincerity and a combined effort, we can tackle problems and usher in peace by fighting extremists with optimal utilisation of resources,” he asserted. Asked about the intricacies involved in the division of assets, especially human resources, he said it was going on smoothly. “We will work in perfect harmony in the best interests of people,” he assured.

“My focus will be to ensure the combined effort of all, to overcome constraints and help the government fulfil the promises made to the people. There are challenges because we need to rebuild everything - infrastructure and systems from scratch and a lot of work is required. That is the reality and we are confident of measuring up to the task ahead,” Mr. Ramudu said, just before heading out for a meeting with the Chief Minister-designate of A.P., N. Chandrababu Naidu.
