Vijayamma launches indefinite fast for united Andhra Pradesh in Guntur

“My son is spending sleepless nights ever since the Congress high command made the announcement on Telangana State. He told me that he will launch fast-unto-death in the jail itself. But I persuaded him against doing so as the police may impose restrictions on visitors and shift him to another place or even outside the State citing law and order problems,” YSR Congress honorary president Y.S. Vijayamma said of Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy in her speech before commencing her indefinite fast called ‘Samara Deeksha’ here on Monday for unified State.

She observed that Jagan was supposed to inherit the legacy of his father Rajasekhara Reddy, which was to fight for the unified State and that is what he has been doing much to the chagrin of his detractors.

Ms. Vijayamma reiterated that the Central government has no right to go ahead with the bifurcation of the State without sorting out issues which have created bad blood between the people of Telangana and Seemandhra regions.

If it cannot deliver ‘equal justice’ to both the regions, status quo should be maintained in the interest of 8.50 crore population of the State.

Those holding the YSRC responsible for the decision taken by the Congress party to divide the State should remember that it was Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy who had politely turned down the idea of bifurcating Andhra Pradesh when none other than Sonia Gandhi moved the proposal in a party conclave.

Instead of simply nodding his head, Mr. Rajasekhara Reddy had constituted a committee headed by the then Finance Minister K. Rosaiah to address issues related to the formation of Telangana State.

She said that her husband had ‘loved the three regions (Coastal Andhra, Rayalaseema and Telangana) equally’ and made a relentless effort to achieve a balanced development.

Mr. Rajasekhara Reddy had no intention of robbing the Telangana region for developing Seemandhra.

Ms. Vijayamma pointed out that the Congress Working Committee’s decision to form the Telangana State sprang a pleasant surprise on TRS, which did not expect it come so soon.

The Congress high command was apparently driven by its compulsion to tinker with the Telangana issue with an eye on 2014 elections.
