Refusing to be drawn into the controversy over the tenders in executing the Polavaram project, Narsaraopet MP Rayapati Sambasiva Rao said that he too wanted the project to be completed in the best interests of the State.

Mr. Rao told The Hindu on Friday that a project like Polavaram would take at least five years as there could not be any compromise on the quality of engineering works.

“The State government will go by the advice of experienced engineers involved in the project. Projects such as Polavaram will take time and it is unfair to expect it to be completed in two years,’’ he said. The MP, who has stakes in the Russian-based Transstroy, said that the company was awarded the project in June 2016.

“The firm is now equipped with modern machinery and is taking up works. We request the State government to give more time and support us to complete the project,’’ Mr. Rao said.
