“There would have been no Nirbhaya had Indira Gandhi been there today, and there would not have been so many instances of rape,” Payal Bose, a post-graduate student of the University of Hyderabad, has said.
She was participating in an elocution competition on the former Prime Minister organised jointly by the Youth Congress and the NSUI as part of the Indira Gandhi birth centenary celebrations here on Saturday.
The achievements of Indira Gandhi were formidable and much more than the achievements of many men.
As per statistics, 72% of single mothers were literally on the road trying to eke out a living doing the most menial of jobs. Indira Gandhi was a role model for all of them. She proved to the world that the hand that rocks the cradle rules the world, Ms. Payal Bose said.
APCC president N. Raghuveera Reddy, former Defence Minister M.M. Pallam Raju, former MP J.D. Seelam, Indian Youth Congress national secretary Abraham Roy, and State president Rajiv Ratan witnessed the competition titled, ‘Maa Tujhe Salaam’.
Mr. Raghuveera Reddy said the State and Central governments seemed to be more interested in erasing the memories of Indira Gandhi than focusing on the severe unemployment the country was facing.
There was nothing worse than the A.P. government removing the name of Indira Gandhi from the Polavaram project.
It was mainly due to her efforts that the country, which suffered from severe food shortage, had surplus foodgrains today, he said.
Mr. Pallam Raju said Indira Gandhi was the most popular Prime Minister of India according to a survey conducted recently.
