Communist Party of India (CPI) national secretary K. Narayana has indicated that the balanced development of Chittoor District is possible only through inclusive growth.

Delivering a lecture to mark the 106th Formation Day of Chittoor District at a function organised by Academy of Grassroots Studies of India (AGRASRI) here on Friday, Mr. Narayana recalled the evolution of the predominantly agrarian and dairy-based district into a multifaceted region that offers promise in the educational, industrial and tourism fronts too.

While there were 8,250 irrigation tanks and water bodies in Sri Krishna Devaraya era, most of them as chain-link canals, many of them were ruined due to the haphazard policies of the rulers post-independence.

“Chittoor can flourish only with completion of Galeru Nagari, Handri Neeva and Somasila Swarnamukhi irrigation projects on a war-footing.

Mr. Narayana also cautioned that the district could lose out in the long run if the rulers confined to meeting the aspirations of only the capitalists and ignored the masses. Mr. Narayana received the ‘Visishta Ratna’ award from APSCHE Chairman L. Venugopal Reddy and AGRASRI founder D. Sundar Ram. Similar awards were also presented to Justice P.S. Narayana, Dravidian University former Vice-Chancellor P.V. Arunachalam, noted urologist Cipai Subramanyam, TTD board member G. Bhanuprakash Reddy, Sarva Siksha Abhiyan project director S. Lakshmi and Sahitya Akademi awardee Rachapalem Chandrasekhar Reddy.

Former Speaker Agarala Eswara Reddi and former Rajya Sabha member N.P. Durga Ramakrishna also took part.
