Promises to take up Telangana issue with Sonia Gandhi
As life in Telangana remained crippled for the 22nd day on Monday, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh assured delegations of the Congress and the Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) from the region that he would try to resolve the separate State issue soon.
Dr. Singh promised the Congress delegation, comprising Ministers, MPs, MLAs, MLCs and senior functionaries, that he understood the Telangana people's aspirations for a separate State and would take up the issue with party president Sonia Gandhi, so that it could be discussed at the party's core committee.
Congress spokesperson Abishek Singhvi said at a press briefing that the leadership was making efforts “for a comprehensive, satisfactory and expeditious resolution…”
The TRS delegation, led by its president K. Chandrasekhar Rao and comprising senior functionaries of the Joint Action Committee for Telangana, claimed after the meeting that Dr. Singh appreciated the way the agitation was being carried out peacefully.
Congress secretary P. Sudhakara Reddy, who joined the party delegation, said that going by the body language of the Prime Minister, he was hopeful of something coming out of Dr. Singh soon.
