A pioneer of paediatric cardiac surgery, former World Congress of Thoracic Cardiac Surgeons president and the first member of the American Association of Thoracic Surgery from India, Dr. K.M. Cherian says it is very important to create awareness among people about organ donation and encourage family members of brain-dead and other patients to voluntarily donate their organs. At the same time, he condemned the recent practice of some corporate hospitals trying to make maximum mileage out of it.
Speaking to The Hindu on Monday after attending the convocation at GSL Medical College here, he said: “I across in media recently a report on heart transplantation from a brain-dead donor for which much hype was created. A lot of publicity was given to the hospitals where the procedure was conducted. I feel it is unethical. We should encourage people who are coming forward to donate their organs voluntarily,” Dr. Cherian said. On India’s first Bio-science park he established within the Medical Special Economic Zone at Elavur, about 6 km from Tada, on the border of Andhra Pradesh, he said, “It is like a ‘human body spare part’ making unit.”
