Unidentified persons broke the hundi at dining hall at Mantralayam and took away the proceeds in the early hours of Friday.

According to reports, the gang cut the CC camera cable before committing the crime. The footage showed only the entry of the strangers. The gang was believed to have broken the lock and taken away the proceeds. The police estimated the money lost to be around Rs. 40,000.

However, the temple authorities said the average monthly returns from the hundi was around Rs. 10 lakh. The hundi was emptied only ten days ago. So the money lost could be around Rs. 3 lakh, they said. A similar burglary had taken place a year ago in Mantralayam.

The temple authorities set up the hundi at the dining hall considering that the devotees would offer donations for free lunch.
