Moderate to heavy rains lashed several areas of the district under the influence of the North-East Monsoon for the second consecutive day on Thursday.

The highest rainfall of 37.8 mm was recorded in Pinapaka mandal in the last 24 hours ending 8 a.m. on Thursday. Heavy rainfall was also recorded in Venkatapuram, Bonakal, Mudigonda, Yerrupalem and a few other mandals.

Drains overflow

Incessant rain led to overflowing of drains in many low-lying areas in Khammam town causing severe hardships to citizens.

The condition of several roads, including the NSP camp road further worsened with stagnant rainwater accumulating in craters hindering the smooth movement of traffic.

According to information reaching here, coal production was partially affected in a few opencast projects in the coal belt areas in the district.

Plea to government

Meanwhile, Andhra Pradesh Rytu Sangham district secretary M Tirumala Rao said that the farmers, particularly cotton growers, suffered huge losses due to unexpected heavy rains in the past few weeks.

Heavy downpour at the crucial harvesting stage inflicted huge losses on the farmers, he said. He demanded that the government should come to the rescue of cotton, paddy, chilli and maize growers who were hard hit by the unexpected rains. The government should purchase the discoloured paddy and wet cotton from farmers through the CCI and other government agencies, he said.
