Meet this 43-year-old housewife from Nalgonda district who celebrates every festival with environmental concern to inculcate the same value among the younger generation to free the world from the use of things that are harmful to the environment.
Arunjoythi S. Lokhandy, a graduate, has made stools for children that can withstand up to 10 kg of weight, dustbins, pens, ornament beads used by women, carrybags, handbags, decorative flowers and dining table sheets, exclusively using old newspapers. Except the gum, Ms.Lokhandy told The Hindu she used nothing other than newspapers. Offering to teach government schoolchildren how to make these things by conducting work-shops free of cost, she met District Collector T.Chiranjeevulu at his office and presented a globe covered with hands that also was made of old newspapers.
Ms Lokhandy said that the students would realise the dangers posed by articles made of plastic if encouragement is given to them to make eco-friendly things regularly used in homes. “Girls who are conscientious about using environment friendly things at home could impact the society greatly as they, later in life, could create these things on their own at home, she observed.
Meanwhile, District Collector, Mr. Chiranjeevulu, flagged off a rally from Clock Tower centre to District Court building marking the World Environment Day on Thursday.
The Collector called upon people to take up plantation of trees to restrict the impact of global warming. Mr.Chiranjeevulu said that they would take up massive plantation of trees across the district.
