Heavy rains in A.P.; toll rises to 16

The death toll in heavy rains and floods that have lashed coastal Andhra for the past several days rose to 16 on Tuesday.

According to official sources, these deaths have occurred in Visakhapatnam, East Godavari, West Godavari, Prakasam and Nellore districts which experienced very heavy rains since the last weekend caused by the onset of the Northeast monsoon.

Meanwhile, in Visakhapatnam, the continuous downpour during the last five days has resulted in the death of seven persons in rain-related incidents, damage to crops and roads in the city and district.

M. Lakshmi, whose house is located on a hill slope at Gajuwaka, died when the wall of her house collapsed in the early hours of Tuesday. In another incident, V. Suryanarayana of Melipaka village of Atchutapuram mandal drowned in the rain water and died on Monday night.
