Heat wave claims 169 lives in Andhra

The prevailing heat wave conditions in Andhra Pradesh have claimed 169 lives with Vizianagaram district accounting for the highest number of 45 deaths, followed by 27 in East Godavari and 22 in Krishna districts.

Deputy Chief Minister K.E. Krishnamurthy, who reviewed the situation on Sunday, announced that Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has decided to extend an ex gratia of Rs. 1 lakh to the next of kin of the deceased.

Monsoon advances

The Southwest monsoon advanced into some parts of Rayalaseema and South Coastal Andhra Pradesh and some more parts of the west central Bay of Bengal.

An IMD bulletin on Sunday evening said conditions were favourable for further advance of the monsoon into some parts of interior Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.

The monsoon advanced on Sunday, said Director of Cyclone Warning Centre,Visakhapatnam, K. Ramachandra Rao.
