Group rivalries in Congress to the fore

May 07, 2014 11:53 pm | Updated 11:53 pm IST - KHAMMAM:

The group rivalries in the district Congress resurfaced soon after the general elections with the leaders owing allegiance to the two groups trading charges against each other in the last few days.

The bickering between two groups owing allegiance to Rajya Sabha member Renuka Chowdary and other to former Minister R. Venkat Reddy re-emerged after a relative lull during the just concluded general elections.

The party faced piquant situation at the threshold of the just concluded general elections when the former Minister Vanama Venkateshwara Rao, considered to be a staunch follower of Ms. Renuka Chowdary, quit the party after being denied ticket to contest from the Kothagudem Assembly seat.

Mr. Venkateshwara Rao held the District Congress Committee president post for more than a decade.

Meanwhile, the leaders of the two rival Congress groups are engaged in a fresh war of words over the issue of “financial transactions” of the party district office.

A section of the Congress leaders sent a letter to the Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee president Ponnala Lakshmaiah seeking a detailed audit of the “financial transactions” that took place in the last 14 years. They further alleged that a person, who had a close association with Mr Venkateshwara Rao, was trying to meddle in the financial matters of the party office here. The leaders of another group strongly countered these allegations and maintained that the party district office has been functioning smoothly.
