The Police Department has proposed a ‘Green Court’ to exclusively deal with cases related to forest crimes, particularly red sanders smuggling and environmental issues.

Chittoor Superintendent of Police Ghattamaneni Srinivas on Monday said the proposal was made at a two-day seminar on ‘Curbing of red sanders Smuggling - a challenge’, organised by the Police Department in coordination with forest, judiciary, revenue and transport wings. Addressing a press conference here, the SP said: “As of now, there are nearly 300 red sanders cases under pursuance with the Chittoor police in addition to hundreds of other criminal cases.

The creation of a Green Court will help expedite the process of disposing cases related to forest crimes.” As part of the strategy to curb red sanders smuggling on a war footing in Chittoor district, the department will launch a massive ‘Kala Jata’ (cultural event) at Piler on December 2, which will have the participation of hundreds of artistes and members of various voluntary organisations and people from villages where red sanders smugglers use hired labour force.

The SP said an official meeting of Superintendents of Police of neighbouring districts of Tamil Nadu (bordering with or close to Chittoor district) would be convened at the earliest. The meeting will devise a strategy to regulate the use of hired labour from Tamil Nadu by smugglers.
