March 19, 2015 05:29 pm | Updated 05:29 pm IST - HYDERABAD:

The Telangana Government on Thursday told the Assembly that it will shortly come up with a renewed policy on payment of tuition fee to students based on local area requirement for beneficiaries as stipulated by the Presidential Order.

The issue which was discussed in the Assembly elaborately on Tuesday, again figured in the House on Thursday when the question of setting up degree colleges was exclusively taken up.

Mr. Srihari assured the members that the irregularities that cropped up in payment of fee would be addressed in the new policy. Except for the condition on local area, the policy would not have major changes.

He assured BJP Floor Leader K. Laxman that the Government will pay the tuition fee of students belonging to 26 caste groups that existed in Andhra Pradesh till they completed courses. The new policy will not apply to first year students of engineering but continued for their seniors in second, third and fourth years.

If everything went well, Mr. Srihari also promised to sanction a residential degree college for women in every district from 2015-16. The Government will map areas where the requirement of these institutions is high for purpose of sanction.

The top priority will be given to start 15 degree colleges for women that were sanctioned by the previous government. A few of them commenced operations with skeletal lecturers, poor accommodation and labs. They would be addressed.
