Goldsmiths hold one-day hunger strike

The Karimnagar District Goldsmiths’ Association leaders staged a dharna and a one-day hunger strike programme in front of the Collectorate, here on Saturday, demanding that the five-men committee recommendations for the welfare and wellbeing of the goldsmiths of the district be implemented.

Association leaders led by district president K. Ramaswamy, general secretary K. Purna Chary, Karimnagar town unit president M. Srinivasu, general secretary R. Ramesh participated in the day-long programme. City legislator Gangula Kamalakar and TRS MLC Naradasu Laxman Rao too extended solidarity by participating in the dharna.

Five-man committee

The association leaders said that the five-man committee constituted by the State government in 2008 had urged the government to implement the various welfare schemes being implemented in Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Gujarat States.

The committee urged the government to constitute a special board for goldsmiths, Rs.5 lakh loans on subsidy, pensions to the goldsmiths, credit card and insurance facilities and girl child protection scheme for the children of goldsmiths.
