Andhra Pradesh Governor E S L Narasimhan on Monday mooted undertaking census operation by asking the citizens to furnish their personal information to the government instead of the enumerators going to each household.
The idea of sending census forms to the citizens for filling them up and submitting to the government would save time for the enumerators and inculcate a sense of responsibility among the citizenry, he said, after launching census collection work in the State at Raj Bhavan.
A pilot project can be undertaken in this regard, he said.
Lack of response from the people can be made a punishable offence at a later stage, he said.
Describing the census work as a mammoth task, Mr. Narasimhan said it should collect data about the facilities being availed of by the people and also to obtain their education and job profile.
Highlighting that the census would help in formulating government schemes, he appealed to the people to furnish details truthfully.
“I request the people to fill up the details truthfully. Do not hide any details. Please cooperate with the enumerators, have patience, spend time with them,” he said.
Earlier, the enumerators obtained the signature of the Governor on his details.
After the formal launch, the census work was started in other districts of the State.
