Sri Venkateswara University (SVU) is all set to expand its academic, scientific and technological research activities in 2015-16. The State government has earmarked Rs. 210 crore the purpose, apart from a revenue of Rs. 40 crore generated by SVU.

Speaking to The Hindu here on Saturday, SVU Vice-Chancellor W. Rajendra said there was no dearth of funds to take up new projects.

“In addition to the annual non-plan grant of Rs. 210 crore, we have generated a revenue of over Rs. 40 crore through admissions and distance education. Apart from this, we have UGC funding, plan grants and overseas sponsored projects. Now, we are focused on research activities. SVU is also ranked the 10{+t}{+h}best university in the south. Our varsity library and laboratories in the science, engineering and technology wings are well equipped, providing the best ambiance for world-class research,” he added.

Erasmus Mundus

Explaining the activities of the university, Prof. Rajendra said: “Under the European Commission’s Erasmus Mundus programme, which brings with it a grant of Rs. 5 crore spanning over five years, merit research students of the university could visit European universities.

SVU has signed MoUs with over 50 universities and has plans for more such overseas tie-ups. Currently, SVU has 14 emeritus professors.” The Vice-Chancellor said the ‘Praghna’ research programme was a great success.

“The programme gives a platform to hundreds of students from schools and junior colleges who want to pursue their dreams. It is heart-warming to see students even from abroad enrolling their names,” he said.

The second oldest university in AP, after Andhra University, radical changes have been introduced to put the administration, admissions and examination exercises in online mode.

“The newly introduced courses in pharmacy, physical education, tourism and other streams in engineering are run-away hits,” he claimed.
