A picnic on the banks of the Krishna at Amaravathi ended on a tragic note as four girls, all of them in the age group of 18 to 21, drowned on Sunday afternoon. The girls were part of the picnic party arranged by Harinam Singh, proprietor of J.P Lucky Gems in Guntur. The deceased were identified as B. Rajani, Santhi, D. Lakshmi Naga Sindhu and Dharani.

According to the Amaravathi police, a group of about eight members, including six girls working as tele-callers in the firm owned by Mr. Singh, arrived at Amaravathi a little after 11 a.m. and crossed the river in a boat.

The girls were playfully engaged in a ball game, when the ball fell into the waters. The four girls reportedly drowned as they tried to retrieve it.
