G. Ramakrishnan (92), founder principal of Sri Venkateswara University College of Engineering (SVUCE) breathed his last at his daughter’s house in Chennai in the early hours of Saturday.
His colleagues and students, who have made prestigious careers and settled across the globe, went nostalgic about their professor.
The credit system, which is in the reckoning for a decade, was started by Prof. Ramakrishnan in his college way back in the seventies. Fondly called as “Prof.G”, he created a B. Tech (Mechanical) syllabus with extensive focus on industrial engineering that was on a par with M.Tech. “TCE hired our B.Tech alumni just by looking at our curriculum. In one batch, nine out of top 10 ranks in GATE were scored by our alumni and most of them landed at National Institute of Industrial Engineering in Powai at Mumbai,” recalls Suresh Perugu, secretary of SVUCE Alumni Association’s Hyderabad chapter.
C.R. Prasad, former Chairman of Gas Authority of India Limited (GAIL) and a first batch student, recalled his professor’s acknowledgement to his New Year greetings just ten days back. Maj. Gen. Dr. R. Sivakumar, Pro Vice-Chancellor of GITAM University and P.Venkatraman, former professor at SVUCE also expressed their sorrow.
According to Prof. Ramakrishnan’s wish, his family donated the cadaver to Madras Medical College for research.
